24 years on Spain side

Spain has never lost a match to a South American rival since Mexico 1986, but the Swiss affair of early June made clear statics mean nothing without hard work and dedication. Paraguay has been problematic for Italy in the debut match, showing they're ready to fight against the big fishes. In three matches between these two teams we've witnessed two goalless draws and one victory for Spain back in Korea/Japan 2002, but the present is radically different.

Three consecutive victories have boosted Spain's team spirit after suffering an unexpected loss at their debut match against Switzerland. David Villa is the top striker of this competition along with Gonzalo Higuain (4 goals for both) while Fernando Torres has not yet lived up to the high expectations his return to the fields were promising. Andres Iniesta, on the other hand, is already leading their team's advance with excellent technique and superb creative abilities.
Fernando Torres was replaced by Fernando Llorente during the match against Portugal due to the weak performance of Liverpool's top striker, and Llorente was much more consistent than El NiƱo on the match.. will Del Bosque favor Llorente instead of Torres? Cesc Fabregas is another player that has not yet been able to perform within the starting squad but whose finesse with the ball can offer Spain another offensive perspective.

Paraguay's endless quest for glory

Paraguay's legendary goalkeeper Jose Chilavert qualified the referee of the match as "the worst in South Africa". Carlos Bartres will have a tough match in his hands, as both nations have shown their worth in South Africa. The Guarani squad is still undefeated while Spain has been unstoppable after the surprise of the debut match.
Victor Caceres' return to Martino's starting squad will be one of the most expected ones for South Americans, as he's been a cornerstone of Paraguay's strong ball recovery skills in the midfield. Paraguay is expected to go for an all-aggressive formation and attack Spain in their weak spot. Caceres' replacement Nestor Ortigoza played an excellent match against Japan, and thus it'd be possible for the Paraguayan coach to make space for him in the midfield. Dario Veron is expected to take over Carlos Bonet's place to give more tranquility in the back line.

Ellis Park will host one of the most decisive matches of this stage. Both teams are ready to write history and claim a place within World's top four, but the Herculean task will be possible for only one of them. Raul Albiol might be once again unable to perform, struggling with injuries. Will Paraguay's overwhelming offensive force be enough to break Vicente Del Bosque's scheme?
