Spain came in first place in the H group, and was equal on points with South Africa, but make it through the next round on goal difference. It was in the last game of the team against Portugal, which ended the game losing 1-0. Portugal know that beating Spain in the next round will be difficult, but sure to give it a shot in itself the best.

The Round of 16 matches at the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa continues today and one match that everybody is hugely anticipating is that of Spain vs Portugal. These two great sides should really provide one of the matches of the tournament. Now we are at the knock out stages of the tournament every moment of every game is crucial so this should be a game full of action and suspense.

The match is being played at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town and kick off is scheduled for 8:30 pm local time, or see the World Clock here for the time wherever you are. Spain was on the top of their group after the group stage, while Portugal was in second position. Currently standing second and third respectively in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, these really are two of the best teams in the world so we should be in for a fine display of football.

For Spain a major blow could be the loss of Xabi Alonso in the team, who sprained an ankle and is dubious to play, according to BBC Sport. Javier Martinez would be the most likely replacement for him. Raul Albiol picked up an injury in training and is definitely unable to play.

Meanwhile Portugal will be bolstered by the return of Deco, recovered from a hip injury, that’s if Carlos Queiroz decides to play him of course. However there are many Portuguese players only one booking away from suspension who will have to be careful or miss the next game. Those players are Almeida, Coentrao, Duda, Mendes, Pepe, Ronaldo and Tiago.

Spain has started the tournament slowly after their shock defeat by minnow Switzerland, and don’t quite seem to have recovered from it. It would be fair to say that Portugal too, have not delivered in quite the way we thought they would, but maybe now that we are in the knock out stage, both teams will be galvanized into action.
